The Switzerland of America. Ouray was incorporated in 1876, the same year Colorado became a state and was named after Chief Ouray of the Ute Indian Tribe. The entirety of Main Street is registered as a National Historic District, with most of the buildings dating back to the late 19th century. Ouray is a popular destination as it marks the beginning of the Million Dollar Highway, a spectacular stretch of road that connects to the neighboring towns of Silverton and Durango.
